The elementary art curriculum at LaFrancis Hardiman is designed to introduce students to the foundational elements of art, including **color, line, shape, form, texture, value, and space**. Through hands-on projects and exploration of different materials and techniques, students develop their creativity, fine motor skills, and ability to express themselves visually. The curriculum is structured to build on these core elements as students progress, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for art.

**Curriculum Description:**
The curriculum follows a structured sequence that introduces key art concepts through engaging projects:

1. **Color:**
   - **Primary Colors** – Students learn to identify and use red, yellow, and blue.
   - **Secondary Colors** – Students learn to mix primary colors to create green, purple, and orange.

2. **Line:**
   - Students explore vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines through guided projects inspired by artists like Alma Thomas.

3. **Shape:**
   - Shape recognition includes geometric and organic shapes. Students apply this knowledge through projects like "Shape Bots" and "Origami Fans."

4. **Form:**
   - Students learn about form by creating sculptures with air-dry clay and practicing origami techniques.

5. **Texture:**
   - Students explore texture using techniques like printmaking with foam plates and building up layers with oil pastels.

6. **Value:**
   - Light vs. dark studies help students understand contrast and how to create depth in their work.

7. **Space:**
   - Students practice layering and paper cutouts to explore spatial relationships and composition.

The curriculum integrates cultural exploration, featuring projects inspired by African masks, Japanese origami, and works by artists like Mondrian and Alma Thomas. Each unit builds on previous lessons, ensuring that students gain confidence and skill in expressing themselves through art.
